UPS
A UPS, or Uninterruptible Power Supply, is the battery-backed system that carries a data center's critical load during the seconds between a utility power failure and generators coming online. It also conditions incoming power to protect equipment from sags, surges, and noise.
The UPS sits between utility power and the IT load, conditioning incoming power and holding stored energy that can carry the load through a disturbance. Its job is not to run the facility through an extended outage. Its job is to make the transition to generator power invisible to the equipment.
Topologies
Double conversion, also called online, is the standard in critical facilities because the load always runs off the inverter and there is no transfer time during a utility event. Line interactive and standby topologies are less expensive and more common in smaller environments.
Storage technology
Valve-regulated lead acid batteries were the long-standing default. Lithium-ion has taken significant share in new construction on the strength of footprint, lifespan, and thermal tolerance, though it carries different fire protection requirements. Flywheel systems appear in some designs where very short ride-through is acceptable.
Why it matters for marketing
UPS and generator specifications are the most photographed and least explained part of a data center. Providers publish a photo of a battery room and a line item saying 2N UPS, which tells a buyer almost nothing about what actually happens during an event.
The stronger content is narrative: walk a prospect through a utility failure second by second, from the disturbance to the UPS pickup to generator start to load transfer to fuel replenishment. That sequence is genuinely reassuring to a risk stakeholder, it is highly specific, and almost nobody in the category writes it down.

How long does a data center UPS run?
A UPS carries the load for a short window, typically seconds to a few minutes, which is only long enough to bridge to generator power. Generators need time to start and stabilize, and the UPS exists to cover exactly that gap. Extended outage coverage comes from the generators and the onsite fuel supply, not the batteries.
What is the difference between lithium-ion and lead acid UPS batteries?
Lithium-ion has displaced traditional valve-regulated lead acid in many new builds because it offers longer service life, a smaller footprint, better tolerance of higher temperatures, and more granular monitoring. The tradeoff is higher up-front cost and different fire protection requirements, which is why both technologies remain in service.
