Hot Aisle Containment
Hot aisle containment is a data center layout strategy that physically encloses the aisle where server exhaust air is discharged, preventing it from mixing with cold supply air. Separating the two air streams significantly improves cooling efficiency and lowers PUE.
Containment addresses the central inefficiency of air-cooled data center design: hot exhaust and cold supply air mixing before either has done its job. Cabinets are arranged so that intakes face intakes and exhausts face exhausts, creating alternating cold and hot aisles, and then one of those aisles is physically enclosed.
Implementation
Containment typically uses doors at the aisle ends, ceiling panels or a full enclosure overhead, and blanking panels in unused rack spaces to stop air short-circuiting through the cabinet itself. The blanking panels are the detail most often skipped and they matter more than their cost suggests.
Why it pays
Eliminating mixing lets cooling units run at higher supply temperatures and lower fan energy while holding the same equipment inlet conditions. It is one of the highest return retrofits available in an older facility, requiring no change to the cooling plant itself.

Containment is the single most visually legible efficiency story a facility has. It is a physical structure a camera can see and a visitor can walk through, which makes it far easier to communicate than an abstract efficiency claim.
On a shoot, a contained aisle with clean cabling and consistent blanking panels does more credibility work than any statistic on the page. It signals operational discipline, and operational discipline is what a colocation buyer is actually purchasing.

What is the difference between hot aisle and cold aisle containment?
Hot aisle containment encloses the warm exhaust aisle and returns that air to the cooling units, leaving the rest of the room at a comfortable temperature. Cold aisle containment encloses the supply aisle instead, leaving the general room warm. Hot aisle containment is more common in newer builds because the working environment stays more comfortable for staff.
How much efficiency does containment actually add?
Containment prevents hot exhaust air from mixing with cold supply air, which means cooling units can run at higher setpoints and lower fan speeds while still keeping equipment inlet temperatures in range. Reducing that mixing is one of the most cost-effective efficiency improvements available in an existing facility.
